On Windows, open the Remote Desktop Connection app. Enter the server IP address, then connect using the username and password provided for the VPS. On macOS, Microsoft’s Remote Desktop app is commonly used for the same job.

Once the login details are accepted, you should see the Windows desktop of your VPS. From there, you can install software, manage files, configure services, and use the server much like a remote PC.

The main advantage of RDP is ease of use. It is familiar, especially if you prefer point-and-click management. The downside is that it generally uses more system resources than a purely terminal-based Linux setup. That does not make it worse - just better suited to different workloads and user preferences.

What to do if your VPS will not connect

If your login fails, the issue is usually one of a few common problems rather than anything especially dramatic.

The first thing to check is whether you are using the correct IP address. It sounds basic, but copying an old address, a private address, or an IPv6 value into a client that expects IPv4 can waste a surprising amount of time.
